Conveying High-Temperature Materials: 5 Core Design Considerations for En-masse Conveyors
The metallurgy, thermal power, and cement industries each require their en-masse conveyors to be designed specifically to meet the needs of "wear resistance, high-temperature endurance and anti-oxidation corrosion," all of which have recently gained importance in the industry. Based on many years of experience, we summarize below five core design considerations:
1.Material Selection: High-Temperature Resistance
It is also clear that high-temperature-resistant materials must be selected first for components that directly contact high-temperature materials, such as scrapers and chains. In this case, heat-resistant steel, such as 310S, can serve well within a temperature range of 600-1200°C. For the non-contacting parts, i.e., casing, troughs, and others, Q345R heat-resistant steel plates are to be selected to avoid any deformation and cracking due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. In case your materials also contain any corrosive component, like in metallurgy, acidic slag, for example, oxidation and corrosion will be avoided by applying an anti-corrosion coating on the material surface.
2.Structural Design: Stability Under High-Temperature Conditions
High temperatures cause thermal expansion and contraction of all components, so structural design should include expansion joints to avoid seizing of equipment. A chain drive system should use high-temperature lubricating grease to prevent lubrication from failing and causing accelerated wear due to high temperatures. Additionally, an insulating layer on the outside of the casing will prevent any high temperatures from transferring to the external environment, not just for the safety of the operating personnel but also for the external component aging rate.
3.Cooling System: Active Temperature Control When Necessary
When material temperatures exceed 1000°C- such as in the cement industry regarding high-temperature clinker- material heat resistance can't be enough. A separate reducing cooling system has to be designed. For instance, this may be achieved by circulating cooling air into the double layers of the casing or by installing water-cooled pipes at the bottom of the trough. Active cooling makes the temperature of the core components maintain within the safe limits, preventing long-term overheating that degrades component performance.
4. Sealing Performance: Preventing Leakage and Dust Emission
Materials at high temperatures either give off rising dust or volatile gases. Therefore, the correct design of the sealing structure is of the utmost importance. Here, the gap between the scraper and the casing is 5 to 8 mm, fitted with high-temperature-resistant sealing strips. The inlet and outlet flexible sealing hoods must be installed to avoid escaping dust that would otherwise pollute the environment. It also prevents cold external air from entering the system and disturbs the stability of the material's conveying temperature (as in thermal power plants, information regarding the conveying of fly ash will support the argument about maintaining the temperature to avoid condensation).
5. Safety Protection: Multidimensional Risk Avoidance
It is difficult to deal with equipment failure in high-temperature conditions. It must be very safe in design. Temperature sensors must be located on the casing at critical points to monitor component temperatures in real time and provide an alarm in case of any temperature exceeding the safe level. Emergency stop buttons should be located outside the high-temperature zone. In case of any explosive materials, such as certain slag in metallurgy, explosion-proof devices are provided.
This leads us to conclude that high-temperature material conveying En-masse Conveyors would center on solving issues related to material wear and structural deformation due to high temperatures, along with resultant safety risks. A truly specific design is possible only through considering particular factors of the material such as temperature, corrosiveness, hardness, and process requirements of various industries.
