Comparison of single shaft, double shaft, and shaftless screw conveyors

Author :

Shafted Screw Conveyor: Equipped with a central solid shaft to support the screw blade; suitable for conveying dry, granular, or powdery materials (e.g., cement, grain) without easy entanglement. Shaftless Screw Conveyor: No central shaft; relies on the rigidity of the screw blade itself for operation; ideal for materials prone to winding, clogging, or caking (e.g., sludge, wet coal, fibrous materials).

Comparison of single shaft, double shaft, and shaftless screw conveyors

Type

structural Features

Core strengths

Applicable materials/scenarios

limitation

Single shaft screw conveyor

One central shaft + spiral blades fixed to the shaft, whereby the shaft drives the blades to rotate and convey materials.

1.Simple structure, low manufacturing cost, and convenient maintenance;

2.Stable conveying efficiency, suitable for long-distance conveying (≤30m);

3.Low energy consumption and low operating noise

Materials that are bulky, dry, non-adhesive, and non-tangle-prone, such as:

• Grain (flour, cereals)

• Mineral powders (cement, lime)

• Granular materials (plastic pellets, chemical fertilizers)

1. Materials with stickiness/moisture that are prone to clogging(such as sludge,pastes).;

2.The shaft is likely to get jammed when materials contain impurities(such as fibers,lumps).

Double shaft screw conveyor

Two parallel central shafts with intermeshing spiral blades, rotating synchronously in opposite directions.

1.The intermeshing blades can shear and agitate materials, making it suitable for adhesive or caking-prone materials;

2.The two shafts feature even force distribution, resulting in strong conveying stability and low tendency to clog;

3.Capable of conveying high-moisture materials (moisture content ≤ 80%).

Materials that are sticky,prone to lumping,and have a certain degree of moisture,such as:

• Sludge,chemical pastes

• Food waste,coal sludge

• Blended powders(such as concrete additives)

1.The structure is complex, and the manufacturing and maintenance costs are higher than those of the single-shaft type.

2. The conveying distance is relatively short (≤15m), and it is not suitable for ultra-long-distance conveying.

Shaftless screw conveyor

No central shaft; the spiral blades are fixed directly to the drive end and rotate relying on their own rigidity.

1.The shaftless design prevents material entanglement and blockages, making it suitable for materials containing fibers or impurities.

2.It can convey large chunks and easily entangled materials, and cleaning is convenient.

3. The machine body can be inclined (≤30°) or vertically arranged, offering flexible installation options.

Materials that are prone to entanglement,contain impurities,and are in large chunks,such as:

• Household waste,kitchen waste

• Waste paper pulp,fibrous waste

• Wet sludge,construction waste(small chunks)

1.The blades have limited rigidity, resulting in short conveying distance (≤10m) and low load capacity;

2.Its energy consumption is higher than that of the single-shaft (screw conveyor), and the blades are prone to wear during long-term use.

Summary of Core Differences

Core Structure: Single-shaft / Dual-shaft rely on the central shaft for power transmission; shaftless models are driven by the rigidity of the blades themselves.

Material Blockage Risk: Shaftless < Dual-shaft < Single-shaft (for viscous/impurity-containing materials).

Cost and Maintenance: Single-shaft < Dual-shaft < Shaftless (determined by structural complexity).

Conveying Capacity: Single-shaft (long-distance, dry materials) > Dual-shaft (medium-distance, viscous materials) > Shaftless (short-distance, easy-to-entangle materials).
